We got the cat scanner from LT and it works very well; there doesn't seem to be any reason to complicate the tech beyond what's meeting our needs quite adequately. It's just the numbers of books (and my OCD need to have the right cover on old paperbacks) that make it a big job.

We actually considered a mechanical system, but wasn't sure it would be loud enough to reach the basement.

Also we want to add some functionality in the future if I need to make lights flash when it rings 'cause I can't hear it at all.

On my way back this weekend, I stopped at a big box hardware store and picked up a cheapo bell to butcher for parts. They weren't exactly the same as the parts we have, but I was able to get the bell working again.

How about a big bell on a pull chain or rope?

No technology at all, you can make them pretty loud, and it would be very cool.

As far as LibraryThing scanning/data-entry; Erci and I stumbled on a trick that may help. Delicious Library (trialware) is cheap, and facilitates using a bar-code scanner or iSight camera on the computer to scan the UPC code of most books.

Delicious Library cannot inventory libraries the size of yours or mine, but you can do smaller batches, scanning into it say, 100 books at a time; then dumping the list of ISBN numbers into a plain file, and importing that list of ISBN numbers into LibraryThing.

If you want to tag, you still have lots of work to do; but at least the batch loading of ISBN numbers is a bit quicker.

I simply type in the ISBNs if the stack of books is fewer than 10 books tall; but if larger - the DL trick does help.

"He’s about three short of a flight." - You shouldn't say such things about people building your house. ;-)

All volunteers welcome.

Looks like painting weekends will be February 16/17 and 23/24.

Of course, I'll be doing work inbetween, but there's plenty of "fun" for everyone.
