Welcome to the chronicle of Bob and Liz’s big adventure into the world of custom home building.

So why does this post say “Medieval Bones”?

Well, that’s the phrase we use when we’re talking architectural-speak to describe the concept behind the structure we want to build.

What’s it mean? Well, the idea is that the main floor is organized as a medieval hall house would be organized.

So what’s that mean? It has a main section - the hall. On one end it has a chamber or solar where the master of the house resides - that’s the master suite in current parlance. On the other end are the service bays, the buttery and pantry. It’s the servants’ end of the house. Between the hall and service bays is an aisle which runs from side to side with doors at either end.

So are we gonna live like medieval country gentry? Nope. We’re pretending that the “original” house has been “updated” over the years. That means more than just electricity and indoor plumbing. It means bringing the kitchen into the house (and putting it into one of the service bays.) It also means adding a second floor, up under the rafters. The main part of the hall will stay open to the rafters.

I’ll rattle on more later, perhaps
