Hey, Hey, Up She Rises . . .

Well, a little bit anyway.

In a previous conversation with our project manager, he outlined the evolving plan to raise the frame in stages due to space constraints on site. Well, on Tuesday he called to say that the first bent bent was up and braced. He reports that everything went well

So much for being there for it.

We have a major meeting scheduled for next week. Among the items on the agenda will be the rest of the raising. There will be much waxing wroth if we don’t get told ahead of time when that is happening.

On the Market and Looking Ahead

So, we’ve been listed for three weekends and still “the buyer” remains elusive. Naturally, we are defying conventional wisdom. On low traffic Mother’s Day weekend, we get traffic. On convenient, between Mom Day and Memorial weekend, we get nada. Still, we have a showing today. We can only hope that this is “the one.”

Meanwhile it’s time to start digging out the research as we are headed for some more decision points.

A big one right now is the exterior doors. Do we go nice real wood like our builder likes? Or do we go high-end fiberglass with its higher R rating and lower maintenance like the building supply guy prefers? Clearly the wood is cooler (literally as well as figuratively) but it is more expensive up front. What to do, what to do?

Timbers progressing

After the owner’s association meeting on Saturday, I visited the site. The rain had roughed up the tarping and the cutting tent a bit, and the clay was a bit soft for walking around on. The overcast kept me from checking out the late afternoon shading provided by the now leafed-out trees. It didn’t prevent me from noting that many of the edge trees have figured out that there is a clearing now, and have started putting out new subsidiary branches from their trunks.  This includes the white oak near the southwest corner of the house. Seems there is still life in that old fellow.

The first bent is cut and lying partly assembled on the deck. The work on the cutting horses is the last of the principal rafter pairs. The companion pairs are stacked on the deck and tarped over. A stack of braces has been tucked away in the basement and a bunch of metal scaffoldy-looking bits have shown up in there.  Check out the pictures in the “Timberframing” gallery.

I also startled a squatter, flushing her out of the basement as I entered. Seems a bird has chosen the batten accross the I-beams where the stair opening will be as the perfect place for a nest. This is unlikely to go well for the family.

To market, to market . . .

The deed is done. The old house is on the market. Although we’re still tidying up a number of prep issues, we thought we needed to get going and on the market before May got much older.

Soooo, we got our “for sale” sign set up on Saturday and it’s got an “I’m gorgeous inside” sub-sign.

The listing was supposed to go up Friday evening but a snafu in the listing price delayed it a little. We got our first call about a showing Sunday for an appointment on Monday.

All this while I was down south for a owner’s association meeting (the first we’ve been able to make, since this year it does not conflict with the Kalamazoo conference.)

So it’s happening. May it all happen quickly.

Dance, people, dance. Please.
