Shelves, Phase Two . . .

are now done, mostly. I’ve got some fussing to do with the kick panels that cover access to the baseboard electrical outlets, but everything else is oiled and in place, and has books on it.

We have a library again! Yea!

Next up: the window seat.

Shelves, Phase One, . . .

are in place in the loft.  And Liz approves.

A couple of touch-ups where I had some nail blowouts (less than 1% by nail count) and the north half of the loft shelving is ready to oil.

Turns out the fix for the screw-up noted in the last post was not as bad as I feared. Just some more cutting of shelves (boring) and the former shelves were able to be re-purposed so the material didn’t go to waste.

Today’s fuss in finishing it off was dealing with two shelves that abut the ceiling boards. For some reason, they turned out to be impossible to measure correctly. I got them jammed in there in the end. Yea. The nosings hide the less than perfect sizing so all is good.

Just finished watching an HGTV show on secret spaces. Hmmm, what sort of interest could that hold?

Lofting - update

Posted by Bob on 09 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: chronicle

The day, nicely cool and pleasantly overcast, was spoiled by too much miscutting due to slipped measurements, fussy fits, and just plain forgetting the correct dimension between the worksite and the workshop where the tools are.  Mostly I was able to re-purpose, so materials loss ain’t in it, but it’s disheartening.

Tomorrow I’ll look into dealing with the worst of it — it’s just too much to face tonight.

Lofting

Most of last week and now this was/is being devoted to work in the library loft.

The framework for the window seat is in place and most of the rest of the pieces are cut and laid in place.  I still need to cut and set the lid for the compartment beneath the seat and line said compartments.  And oil the whole thing, of course.  Then the search for the “right” cushioning will begin.

Additional battens have been cut for the shelving and some shelves have actually been cut.  More of that today.  I am hoping to get the  north half of the shelving done, with all supports and nosings in and everything oiled b,efore the ened of this week.  If I do, we can get some books unpacked this weekend, which will — not coincidentally –  get me access to some of the south wall for additional shelving.

Much cutting and fitting to do.  Off to do some.

Progress, She is Being Made

Last week, the plywood for the library shelves arrived.  It’s unloaded in the garage, next to the sawhorses set up for cutting it.  Tomorrow, the new saw for cutting it is scheduled to arrive.

Why a new saw?  Because the old one couldn’t — excuse the expression — cut it.

Meanwhile I’m working on the window seat.  Its frame is in place, as is the “wainscotting” for the back wall.   The next step is a juggling act among the seat backs, front “wainscotting” and the “bench ends” as I try to figure out exactly where various runs of wood end.
